Are Old Gold Coins Valuable?

Old gold coins are valuable for two reasons: they are made of gold and they could potentially have value to collectors. Owning such coins, however, is not the same as owning gold bullion (physical gold). Coins made of gold usually have a premium associated with them because they are collectible; this means that you will pay an additional cost to own them beyond their value in gold. This means that an investment in coins is not the same as an investment in gold.

Gold bullion can be easily traded on precious metals markets but trading gold coins is much less liquid because their value can vary depending on their rarity, condition and the demand for them among collectors and for this reason they are best traded by certified coin dealers to maximize returns. This means that it is a much less liquid market and can make it much more difficult to sell coins quickly.
