A Licensed Building Practitioner LBP is a qualified person who is authorised to carry out building work that requires a higher level of technical knowledge and skill. Becoming an LBP involves meeting certain qualifications and criteria, such as having specific qualifications and experience in the building industry.
In order to become an LBP, individuals must first complete the Building Legislation Qualification BLQ. This qualification covers all aspects of the New Zealand building laws, including health and safety regulations for buildings. The BLQ can be completed online or through an accredited training provider.
Once individuals have successfully completed their BLQ certification, they can then apply for registration as an LBP with the Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment MBIE. MBIE will review applicants’ qualifications and experience to determine whether they are eligible for registration. If approved, applicants will be issued with their licence which allows them to engage in various activities within the construction industry such as issuing consents or certifying workmanship on certain types of projects.
