Benefits Of Hemp Construction

Many states have recently legalized marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. The cannabis plant also has its usage in the construction industry. It has been used as a sustainable construction material since ages. However, it is only recently that it is getting more attention in this industry. The hemp construction material is prepared by mixing lime with the woody fibers of hemp. This mixture creates a lightweight concrete that has high insulation and thermal mass properties.

Also known as hempcrete, this simple material has revolutionized the construction of low impact houses. This material does not get affected by the pests and molds. It has low humidity and good acoustic properties. The hemp plant takes only four months to achieve full growth from the seed planting stage. It can grow up to 15 feet high and does not require too many resources for growth. It can grow in various climates including the harsh ones where other plants cannot grow easily. It produces the tough woody fiber from its core known as hurd. This fiber is the raw material used to make hempcrete.
