Camping alone as a woman does not have to be scary or dangerous. If you’re smart about where you are and how to handle any potential situation, you’ll be just fine. There are a few specific things you can do to keep yourself safe and prepared for unexpected encounters.

Start by having a phone that is fully charged. Don’t use it until you absolutely need it. You’ll also want a flashlight, plenty of water and food, and necessities such as sunscreen, bug spray, first aid supplies, and extra layers to keep you warm at night and cool during the day.

Have something to protect yourself as well. You can use a whistle, a small horn, mace spray, and even bear repellent, which includes cayenne pepper and may protect you against wild animals and humans who may have terrible intentions. Don’t be afraid to enjoy the outdoors.
