Research suggests that acupuncture for back pain can be an effective treatment and that it provides short-term relief in sufferers of chronic back pain. Acupuncture is an ancient medical technique that originated in Chine more than two millennia ago that involves the insertion of thin needles at special points in the body to cure or manage various ailments.

The human body has over 2000 acupuncture points, according to practitioners, that are connected by pathways called meridians. These pathways are said to modulate the flow of Qi energy and stimulating them helps to balance the flow of this energy and thus improve a person’s health. Scientists believe acupuncture operates by stimulating the central nervous system so that it releases certain chemical into the spinal chord, muscles and brain that can have a therapeutic effect in managing pain and promoting a feeling of well being in a patient.
