High Functioning Anxiety: When Worry is Your Constant Companion

Despite the misleading name, high functioning anxiety disorder can be a debilitating condition. People with this condition are often able to navigate their work and personal lives seemingly with ease. However, they are plagued by a constant worry and perfectionism that can result in burnout without proper management.

Often considered a subtype of generalized anxiety disorder, high functioning anxiety manifest in several ways. An individual may experience nervousness, restlessness, and irritability while outwardly appearing calm. They may also struggle with expectational anxiety, a fear of underperforming or failing, and avoidance in situations that could trigger their anxiety. Other symptoms may include tense muscles, difficulty concentrating, and insomnia.

People with high functioning anxiety may find it challenging to seek help, as they feel compelled to present an image of having everything under control. However, seeking treatment may lead to significant improvements in productivity, relationships, and overall wellbeing. Psychotherapy, mindfulness, and medication, if needed, can be helpful.
