Hiking The Appalachian Trail

If you can take the time off to do it, one of the best hiking adventures is to complete the Appalachian Trail in the Eastern US. The trail was opened in the 1930s and stretches around 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine, making it one of the longest footpaths or trails anywhere in the world. It takes in some of the most spectacular scenery and remote places in the country, and the terrain varies from easy going to strenuous. To hike the entire trail takes most people between five and seven months; not surprisingly, many people choose to break it up into shorter stretches. Unless you want to camp, you can plan your overnight accommodation along the length of the trail, with a choice of hostels, motels and cabins to rent close to the trail, although many are booked up ahead of time.
