After drinking alcohol for some period of time many people ask, ‘How long will it take me to get sober?’. Unfortunately there are no quick and easy answers to this question. While most people can metabolize one standard drink per hour there can be significant differences between people depending on their health and other factors.

One way to measure sobriety is to look at the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of a person; it measures the amount of alcohol in your blood compared with the amount of water there. In the US a BAC of 0.08 grams per decilitre means that you are regarded as drunk for legal reasons (such as when driving a motor vehicle).

However the amount of alcohol that is required to reach that level and how long it stays in a person’s system is subject to an array of factors including body type, how quickly you are drinking and whether they have consumed food while drinking.
