How To Check AFC Count

The Antral Follicle Count (AFC) count is a test that measures your ovarian reserve. This is a study that’s conducted in the early phase of your menstrual cycle (between day two and day five). Herein your physician will take the time to make a visual count of how many egg-containing follicles are developing on both of your ovaries.

Learning how to check AFC count isn’t difficult to do. This is something that does require the use of a transvaginal ultrasound though. Typically the test is conducted as part of a fertility workup or you may need to undergo it before you are given a fertility treatment cycle.

With an AFC count, your doctor will initially look at the ovarian volume of both of your ovaries. Next they’ll measure the number of small antral follicles (varying in size from 2-10 mm) that are found within both of your ovaries.
