There is something about decorative candles that makes a room feel more inviting. Maybe it’s the soft, flickering light or the way they add a touch of warmth and personality. Whatever the reason, decorative candles are becoming increasingly popular in homes across the country. If you’re interested in learning how to make your own handmade decorative candles, this is the perfect guide for you!
Gather The Ingredients & Tools
The first step in making your decorative candles is to gather the necessary ingredients and tools. For this project, you will need: Wax (either paraffin or beeswax), a wick, a double boiler, Pigment or dye (optional), Essential oils (optional), and a mold of some kind (more on this later)
The Process
Once you have all your materials, the next step is to begin the candle-making process. If you’re using paraffin wax, start by melting it in the double boiler. If you’re using beeswax, there’s no need to melt it first – simply place it in the pot with the wick. Once the wax is melted (or if you’re using beeswax, once it’s been placed in the pot), add your Pigment or dye and essential oils, if desired. Stir until everything is thoroughly combined. Next, carefully pour the wax into your mold(s). Leave enough room at the top for the wick(s) – about ¼ inch should do the trick. Allow the wax to cool and solidify before moving on to the next step. Once your wax is cooled and hardened, it’s time to add the wicks. Cut them to size (again, leaving about ¼ inch of wick poking out of the top of the candle), then use a glue gun or other adhesive to secure them in place. Once the wicks are in place, your candles are ready to be lit! Enjoy their warm light and beautiful scent. And when they’re finally burned down to nothing, they simply repeat the process.
With a little practice, you’ll be an expert candle-maker in no time at all!
