Team Metrics, also called Metrics for Working Teams (MW), is productivity measurement and information collection tools for identifying strengths and gaps between the performance of teams within a business organization. The concept behind team metrics evolved from the organization to facilitate better decision-making about the organization’s most important short-term goals. Teams were set up to work collaboratively towards these short-term goals, which typically included growth within the organization. As the realization of the organizational goals came about, a need for metrics to measure performance against these short-term benchmarks was also identified.

The measurement of a team’s progress has now been incorporated into the agile development process. Team metrics measure the efficiency of the team in its ability to deliver quality solutions. By measuring and monitoring the success of the team, managers can determine if they are meeting their short-term and long-term goals.
