Planning Your Food Photography Surface

Taking good photos of food presents a number of unique challenges. You need to get the perfect angle, and you need to really showcase what’s so special about the items that you’re photographing. One way to ensure you have a successful photoshoot is by preparing a food photography surface that works with you instead of against you. A few key details matter more than most.

First, you need to make sure it doesn’t create a glare when you snap the photo. Surfaces that are mirrored or too shiny may seem delightful to look at, but they won’t necessarily photograph well. Look for a muted color or something natural. Wood can work well or a covering that’s in a dark, solid shade. You may have to experiment with a few different surfaces until you get exactly what you’re looking for with your photo.
