A Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD WAN) is a network whose structure is defined through software rather than its physical network components. This approach provides many benefits including that network traffic can be routed to maximize speed, it is highly flexible, enables connection of hybrid network types and protocols and enables a single point of control for administration, among others.
Implementing an SD WAN solution, however, can be complex and many IT departments turn to managed SD WAN solutions where the provider not only implements the technology for a customer but also manages it on an on-going basis. This enables customers to achieve significant initial cost savings and convert their network architecture so that it is agile and customizable while also being assured of service levels and that any future network maintenance requirements will be addressed by the provider.
