Information technology management (or IT management) refers to the practices, procedures and policies that apply to the purchase, implementation, use and maintenance of all IT resources in a business. It is both a business function and an organizational imperative since IT has become crucial to all aspects of business operations.

IT managers require a diverse range of management and technology skills to effectively perform their function. They must be able to show subject matter expertise in technology as well as knowing how to apply it effectively to the business in which it is used. This requires implementing a service strategy that will meet end-user requirements both currently and in the future. Such managers also need to have a strong understanding of general management principles and business operations practices to meet the technological needs of the business to both support and transform it on an ongoing basis.
