Sports physiotherapy (or sports physio) is a specialization in physiotherapy which deals specifically with the diagnosis and treatment of injuries that are suffered while playing sport or exercising. Injuries sustained whilst playing sport need to be assessed in the context of the circumstances and demands of the sport being played and sports physiotherapists have the knowledge and experience to treat these types of injuries.
Sports injuries can provide unique challenges and are different to other injuries that people suffer in their day-to-day lives that require physiotherapy. Playing sport places significant pressure on the ligaments, joints, tendons and muscles and can make people much more prone to injury in these areas. Sports physiotherapists deal with these types of injuries as well as helping athletes focus on improving their performance and helping to avoid injuries in the first place when playing sports.
