What to Expect with a Tooth Procedure

Needing a root canal surgery is nothing to fear. This dental procedure is very common. Many who undergo it experience little to no discomfort during the process.

When a tooth has a deep cavity, it can lead to infection and inflammation. Removing the infected pulp and replacing it with a filling will save the tooth and alleviate pain. The procedure usually requires two appointments with your dentist.

At the first appointment, your dentist will make an opening in the top of the tooth and remove the affected pulp. Your dentist will then place a temporary filling to seal the cavity.

During the second appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary filling, clean the area and replace it with a permanent filling. Your dentist will then place a crown over the tooth to protect it. After the procedure, it’s important to take care of the tooth by brushing it twice a day and by flossing every day.

If you encounter pain in your tooth leading up to the procedure, you can use an over-the-counter pain medicine to relieve it. Your dentist can also provide a numbing agent if needed.

Root canal surgery is a common and necessary procedure to save a tooth. The treatment is generally pain-free, and your dentist will be there to guide you through it.
