Hemp clothing is made from the hemp fibers harvested from the stalk of the hemp plant. This is not a new phenomenon, before the 1920’s 80% of clothing was made from hemp. Over 10,000 years ago, man made strong and durable fibers from this plant. It offers UV protection and is mold resistant.
In one acre of hemp, 5 to 10 tons of cellulose fiber can be produced from the pulp. Because the plant grows so fast, in just four months a new crop is ready for harvesting. The hemp fiber is often combined with other fibers like silk and cotton to achieve different qualities in the fabric.
Hemp can be used to make all types of clothing from knits to weaves. It’s a great crop requiring half as much water as cotton, and it doesn’t require pesticides to protect the crop from insects.
