Mother is a film by director Darren Aronofsky that explores the events that occur when a couple accept two unexpected visitors into their isolated lives in a home located in the country. Through a series of events the tension escalates and the wife becomes increasingly unhinged.

Aronofsky wrote the script for the film and says that he wanted to create a horror film in the form of a home invasion which begins innocently enough as guests who don’t know when it’s time to leave. The film draws on symbols and stories from the Bible as well as literature from the Victorian era. The Mother movie meaning inheres in the way that the house and the wife are metaphors for mother Earth, he says, and is a commentary on the way mankind has taken from the planet and ultimately caused its environmental destruction – he calls it a wake-up call for humanity.
