Nutritional supplements contain vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes and other compounds that are required by the body for good health. They can come in a variety of forms such as capsules, tablets, powders, drinks and energy bars among others. Examples of popular supplements include those containing vitamins B12, C and D; minerals like iron and calcium; herbs such as garlic, Ashwagandha and Echinacea; and products that contain fish oils and probiotics.

Many of these supplements contain active ingredients that can have a significant effect when consumed and people should be careful to avoid possible negative reactions, depending on other health conditions they may have. When taken in high doses or when combined they can have undesirable side-effects and they may also interact with medicines prescribed by doctors. While these reactions are rare it is a good idea to seek medical advice when taking supplements if a person is suffering from other health issues.
