Sewing Patterns For Beginners

Sewing patterns for beginners are the simplest ones available. They will have as many as six pieces not including interfacings. Generally, there will be a simple pocket construction, such as side seam or patch pockets. The style of garment should not have a collar or set-in sleeve.

If the pattern is for a pair of pants, it will not have a fly with a zipper or waistband. Instead, the waist will be a pull-on with an elasticized waistband. This is the same type of construction that a beginner skirt or dress will have.

Tops and blouses for beginners are much more complicated as to avoid buttons, the piece would need to be in stretch fabric or knit. Knit fabric by nature is harder to handle than woven fabric, plus to sew it with a nice finish you need a stretch stitch and overcast seam. This is not available to the average beginning seamer. Otherwise, beginner or not, you have to master making plackets, facings, and buttonholes.
